REC has many resources for converting a U.S. Military 6x6 to a wildland fire engines. REC Project 63. 6x6 Wildland Fire Engines. During 2001, REC revamped its information on both 2.5-ton and 5-ton 6x6 vehicles. We titled this Project 63 and it replaced Project 22 (which is out-of-print) and Project 39. Below is a listing of packets available for Project 63. Those with hyperlinks are ready and can be downloaded in Adobe Acrobat (pdf) format. Some publications are large and may take some time to download if you have a slower connection. Other Useful Reports Related to 6x6's REC NewsNote 13, Adding a Back-Up Alarm to Military 6x6's shows a method for installing a switch and back-up alarm. Newly published in October 2001. REC Project 39, Tanker Handbook: Military 5-Ton 6x6, 1500 Gallon Low Profile Tanker has been replaced by parts of Project 63 listed above. This publication, available in print only, has design information for building a tank, brush armor and hard-top cab. The Project 63 version is modernized and available in electronic format. A limited number of Project 39 reports are available for those who have an interest in a slightly different design. REC NewsNote 9, Adding a 12 Volt DC Charging Circuit describes how to add a 12-volt system on top of an existing 24-volt one. We discuss installing a 12-volt alternator and a battery that runs fire equipment appliances such as radios, pumps and hose reel motors. REC Project 2, Wiring Conversions on Military Vehicles discusses the options you have for designing an electric system for your military vehicle. With this information, you should be able to decide how you want to add 12-volt features to your converted vehicle. Options include converting everything from 24 to 12-volt to adding various types of 12-volt systems to power the fire appliances only. This publication includes REC NewsNote 9 mentioned above. The hyperlink takes you to our online Adobe Acrobat file. REC Project 25, Protective Cabs for 6x6 Trucks - GMC & REO shows an older design for fabricating a steel cab top for 2.5 and 5-ton 6x6's. The design is also found in Project 39 discussed above. This publication has been replaced by Project 63E. Project 25's design is useable if the original canvas cab side window jams are in good shape. Otherwise Project 63E is a better choice. Printed publication only.
