Tandem Rear Axles Determining Loads and Wheelbase on Trucks with Tandem Rear Axles The "calculator" works with tandem, as well as, single rear axles. It is important to know how to measure the weight and wheelbase of tandems in order to assure a correct estimate. The figure shows a chassis with a tandem. Determining the weight on the tandem axle set by having the complete set on the scale. This is centered halfway between the two rear axles. The wheelbase for a tandem rear axle truck is defined as the horizontal distance between the front axle centerline and centerline between the tandem axles. Thus the weight of the rear tandem is centered at rear measuring point of the wheelbase. The above definition means that the "calculator" will work well with a tandem rear axle vehicle. The weight on the rear tandem axle set becomes the weight on the rear axle. The wheelbase is the distance between center point of that weight and the centerline of the front axle as shown in the figure. Tandem Axle Wheelbase
